The patient portal is where your patients book, see their appointments and results, and complete forms. You can change the words patients see there, and decide whether they can correct their own details without contacting you.

Before you start

  • Only the clinic owner can change these settings.
  • Portal settings are split across two settings pages: the portal wording is on Branding, and the self-service option is on Patient notifications.

Change the portal wording

  1. Open the account menu at the bottom of the left sidebar and select Clinic settings.
  2. Under Clinic, select Branding.
  3. In Patient portal copy, enter a Header tagline (up to 100 characters). It appears under your clinic name in the portal header.
  4. Enter a Welcome message (up to 500 characters). It appears on the portal home page. If you leave it blank, patients see “Welcome to” followed by your clinic name.
  5. Select Save changes in the Unsaved changes bar.

Let patients update their own details

  1. In Clinic settings, under Clinic, select Patient notifications.
  2. In the Patient portal section, turn on Let patients update their own details.
  3. Select Save changes.

What happens next

  • The tagline and welcome message show the next time a patient opens the portal. The tagline is also used as the description when someone shares your portal link or adds the portal to their phone’s home screen.
  • With self-service on, patients can change their name, phone number and date of birth from the portal’s Settings page, without staff checking the change. With it off, those fields are read-only and patients are asked to contact the clinic.

Good to know

  • Self-service is off until you turn it on.
  • The Patient portal copy card also has Show clinic branding in email notifications, which controls whether your logo and colour appear in patient emails. It doesn’t change the portal. See Brand your patient portal and emails.
  • Patients can always change their own communication and marketing preferences, whatever this setting says.
  • Patients can’t change their email address themselves, because it is how they sign in.
  • Your portal address is shown on Clinic settings > Details as Patient portal URL. See Update your clinic details.
